At first glance, this is a small portrait of an elderly gardener. But behind his gaze lies the story of an entire life.
My grandfather, Musulmonqul, was a man of dignity, honesty, kindness, and unwavering principles. He never sought recognition or wealth. He believed that the greatest legacy a person can leave is a life lived with integrity, hard work, and devotion to family.
His life was lovingly documented by my father, who wrote a biography preserving not only the events of his father's life, but also his wisdom, character, and values. Decades later, those handwritten memories became the inspiration for this painting.
When I painted my grandfather, I was not simply creating his portrait. I was giving visual life to the memories my father preserved in writing. Every wrinkle, every expression, and especially his eyes reflect the quiet strength of a man who endured life's hardships without losing his compassion or humanity. His gaze speaks of resilience, humility, hope, and deep love for his family.
Sometimes I wonder whether my father could ever have imagined that one day the portrait of his own father would be exhibited at the European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) in Barcelona. I like to believe he would have been deeply moved to know that the story he preserved in writing would one day continue to live through my art.
Through this portrait, I pay tribute to my grandfather and to the precious legacy my father preserved for our family. I hope that when people look into my grandfather's eyes, they will see more than just a portrait. I hope they will encounter a man who lived with dignity, kindness, and quiet strength—and whose story continues to inspire future generations.
